How can Bangladesh achieve agro-economic sustainability amid shrinking land resources, traditional crop cultivation practices, and other demographic and socio-cultural challenges? This book addresses these pressing issues through the application of GIS-based land suitability and economic viability analysis.
Combining spatial modeling, remote sensing techniques (NDVI), and economic viability assessment, this study develops an integrated framework for optimizing crop selection and agricultural land use planning. The findings demonstrate that aligning agricultural practices with land suitability can significantly enhance crop production, profitability, income, food security, and long-term socio-economic sustainability.
Using Rajshahi as a case study, the book examines key pressing issues such as crop diversification, cropping pattern changes, land use change, and agro-economic resilience. It provides practical insights and evidence-based recommendations for farmers, agricultural planners, policymakers, researchers, and development agencies working toward sustainable land management. It is found that only land suitability-based crop cultivation can increase BDT 97,930 crores in Bangladesh and agriculture sector alone could contribute a lot to develop Bangladesh. This work offers a roadmap for sustainable agro-economic development in Bangladesh and other developing countries.
